Webinar Schedule
Note: See below for five high-value post-webinar resources that I will provide each attendee, including the full recording, exclusive prompts, and free access to a Premium Guide.
Pre-Webinar Activity: Reflection on AI’s Role
Objective: Participants will develop a preliminary assessment of the role of AI in their specific fields and courses.
Activity Description: Prior to the webinar, attendees will:
Reflect on the extent to which AI can augment or enhance core tasks, processes, and outputs in their field.
Consider the primary tasks that could be completed entirely by AI, how AI might enhance existing tasks, and new possibilities AI could open up.
Identify fundamental skills and knowledge essential to their discipline, regardless of AI capabilities.
Resources: I will provide a structured step-by-step handout to structure this reflection. I will send it on Tuesday, September 3.
Part 1: Assessing and Adjusting Course Objectives
(20 minutes)
Objective: Attendees will gain a clear idea of how to adjust their course objectives to incorporate AI effectively.
Content:
Introduction to the concept of "backwards course design" in the context of AI integration.
Provision of a framework for categorizing existing objectives based on AI impact:
Objectives significantly enhanced by AI
Objectives moderately impacted by AI
Objectives that should remain independent of AI
Process for adjusting existing objectives and adding new AI-specific objectives:
Theoretical understanding of AI/LLMs
Practical proficiency with AI/LLMs
Ethical considerations in AI use
Case studies demonstrating objective adjustment across different disciplines.
Part 2: Designing AI-Enhanced Activities and Assignments (20 minutes)
Objective: Attendees will be equipped with strategies to create engaging, AI-integrated learning experiences, as well as methods to avoid AI misuse to further learning objectives.
Content:
In-class implementations:
AI tool demonstrations and workshops
Group activities leveraging AI
Individual hands-on exercises with AI tools
Out-of-class assignments:
Designing AI-inclusive and AI-exclusive assignments
Strategies to prevent AI misuse while encouraging appropriate AI integration
Examples of activities and assignments across various disciplines.
Part 3: Practical AI Training Techniques
(20 minutes)
Objective: Attendees will be prepared to effectively train students in the nuts and bolts of AI tool use, with a focus on LLMs.
Content:
Fundamentals of effective prompting, including:
Role assignment
Step-by-step instructions
Exemplars
Formatting inputs
Advanced techniques:
File uploading, context prioritization, and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
Iterative prompting and refining outputs
Strategies for teaching critical evaluation of AI outputs:
Recognizing hallucinations and biases
Fact-checking and verification methods
Metacognitive reflections
Part 4: Integrating AI Ethics into Your Course
(15 minutes)
Objective: Attendees will develop a better understanding of how to incorporate AI ethics into their curriculum.
Content:
Overview of key ethical considerations in AI use.
Strategies for weaving ethics throughout course content.
